이번 포스트에서는 LinkedIn을 통해 미국 대학원 연구실에 컨택하는 과정에 대해 알아보겠습니다. 제가 한국인 없는 연구실을 선호했던 이유와 제 실제 사례를 통해 어떻게 컨택하는지 살펴보겠습니다. 🌟

한국인이 없는 연구실을 선호한 이유

저는 개인적으로 한국인이 없는 연구실을 선호했어요. 😅 특정 국가 출신들이 몰려있는 연구실도 피하고 싶었죠. 이유는 간단합니다. 미국 사회에서 살아남고 네트워크에 깊이 들어가기 위해서는 연구 역량뿐만 아니라 영어 실력과 네트워킹 능력 등 배울 것이 많기 때문이에요. 이러한 것들을 일상적인 환경에서 자연스럽게 배우고 싶었답니다.

그래서 한국인이 없는 연구실에도 컨택을 시도했어요. 세 군데 연구실의 외국 학생들에게 연락을 취했는데, 첫 번째는 읽씹 😢, 두 번째는 친절한 답장 😊, 마지막은 Zoom 미팅까지 이어졌습니다. 이렇게 현재 재학생에게서 직접 듣는 정보는 매우 유익해요. 교수님의 현재 생각이나 학생들의 생활 방식 등 최신 정보를 들을 수 있기 때문이죠.

LinkedIn에 익숙하지 않은 한국인들 중에는 먼저 연결 요청을 하고 메시지를 보내는 것에 망설이는 경우가 많아요. 😅 하지만 LinkedIn으로 컨택하는 것이 미국 문화에서 전혀 이상한 일이 아니며, 메시지를 보내도 손해 볼 것이 없으니 일단 행동하는 것이 중요합니다. 💪

아래는 제가 경험한 몇 가지 실제 사례입니다. (이름, 학교, 회사, 연구실 이름은 변경/삭제되었습니다)

Case 1: 읽씹

Hello Alex Chen,

I'm interested in the PhD program at ### Lab and would appreciate it if you could answer a few questions about the admission process.

처음 시도하는 것이라 간단하게 보냈는데, 읽고 답이 없더군요. 😢 하지만 답이 없는 게 정상입니다! 처음 시도하는 것이라 이 정도로 보냈는데, 확인을 하고 답이 없더라고요. 그런데 답이 없는게 정상입니다! 실제로 박사과정 학생들에게도 명문대에 재학 중이라면 심심치 않게 Admission 관련 연락이 옵니다. 그래서 친절한 답변은 처음부터 기대없이 보내는게 나을 수 있습니다.

제가 아는 유명 대학의 박사 과정 친구도 꽤 자주 이런 질문을 받습니다. 메일이 오는 국가는 아시아, 남미, 유럽 등등 굉장히 다양하다고 합니다. 이렇게 누군가는 안보이는 곳에서도 적극적으로 박사 과정 입시를 뚫기 위해 노력하고 있다는 것을 알면서 저도 더 노력하게 되었습니다.

Case 2: 친절한 답변

읽씹 당한 뒤로 메시지를 보완하기 시작했습니다. 이번에는 교수님께 컨택 메일을 보낸 후 답을 받지 못한 상황이었습니다.

Hello Jamie Smith,

I'm Jordan Lee, a research engineer at ###. Thank you for accepting my invitation.

I've been following your work, especially on ###, for some time and I'm interested in the PhD program at ### Lab. If you don't mind, I have a few questions about the admission process.

Hi Jordan, thanks for reaching out :)! Please feel free to ask any questions you have.

Jordan Lee (Me):

I've been interested in ### since its very first version :)

You might not know, but do you happen to know if there will be any open PhD positions in the coming year? Should I contact the professor first, or will the lab be assigned after admission?

I already emailed Prof. ### but haven't received a response yet.

Hi Jordan, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I'm glad to hear about your interest in ###! I wouldn't know about any open PhD positions, as Dr. ### would be the best person to comment on that. If you want to work with him for your PhD, make sure to mention it in your statement of purpose. It's also beneficial to discuss your interests with the professor beforehand so that when your SOP is reviewed, the professor can confirm there has been some communication. Personally, I chose a lab after starting my Masters program, but in hindsight, the other approach is better :).

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the helpful explanation! I now have a clear understanding of the admission process.

Case 3: Zoom 미팅

이 경우는 LinkedIn이 아니라 이메일로 요청한 내용입니다. 지원 후 입시 과정을 물어보려고 한 것이었고, 교수님께는 이미 컨택 메일을 드렸던 상황이었습니다.

Jordan Lee (Me):

Dear Max Till,

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Jordan Lee, and I have recently submitted my application to ###. I am interested in pursuing a PhD at ###.

With the holiday season approaching, I understand you may be busy. However, if you have the time, I was wondering if we could have a brief Zoom chat.

I am particularly interested in learning more about ###'s admission process and life at ###. I have a few questions and believe your experiences and perspectives would be invaluable.

Please let me know if there's a convenient time for you.

I appreciate your time and assistance in advance and look forward to possibly connecting with you.
